So, I totally forgot about Sweetest Day until JUST NOW. I saw it mentioned somewhere and Googled the 2009 date. Of course, it's today! While I Googled the date, I actually came across the history of Sweetest Day and I had know idea that it wasn't originally geared towards romantic love or special friend appreciation. Apparently, Sweetest Day is a holiday primarily celebrated in the Midwestern U.S. states of Illinois, Michigan and Ohio, but recently seems to have gained popularity in other regions. It is celebrated on the third Saturday in the month of October (duh… I need to add it to my calendar).
The holiday is said to have begun in the city of Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. Candy store employee Herbert Birch Kingston put together a group of citizens to provide small gifts to homeless people, orphans, and others who had fallen on hard times. I have a totaly different outlook on this mini-holiday. Perhaps I'll expand my little gifts to more than just Brenda. How 'bout I start right now? Leave me a comment telling me whether or not you remembered and if you did anything special. I'll randomly choose one person to win a free stamp set. Anyway, I didn't get a chance to make a Sweetest Day card (since I totally spaced) so I wanted to share this little tidbit with you.
